CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Bulldogs recorded 18 hits at Xavier to score 12 runs, but their comeback would fall short with the Musketeers hanging on for the 17-12 victory.
Gehrig Parker,
Harrison Freed and
Connor Dall all homered in the setback. BU is now 23-15 overall with a 2-6 mark against conference opponents.
Xavier took a quick 3-0 lead after one, but the Bulldogs would score one in the third and fourth to make the game 3-2. The difference came in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings as Xavier rattled off 11 runs to take a commanding 14-2 lead.
The Bulldogs never quit as they came up with 10 runs over the final four innings, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Tyler Houston had a day offensively going 4-for-6 from the plate with a double, a RBI and a run scored.
Gehrig Parker was the team's RBI leader with three. Parker went 3-for-6 at Xavier in game two with three runs scored.
Nearly every player in the BU batting order scored a run on Saturday afternoon.
Garrett Christman and
Michael Hartnagel each recorded two. The tandem combined for four hits as well with Hartnagel earning an RBI.
Ryan Pepiot took the loss for BU while Garrett Schilling was able to toss five innings for Xavier to move to 3-3 on the year. Pepiot was hit with seven earned runs over 3.2 innings pitched. Butler also used
Danny Pobereyko,
Josh Walker,
Kevin Napoleon and
Ottavio Dattolo on the mound.
The top of the Xavier lineup was excellent on Saturday. Rylan Bannn went 6-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Joe Gellenbeck had four RBI's on one hit and lead-off man Mitch Gallagher was in the box score with three RBI.
Butler's first run of the game came in the third inning off a lead-off homer from
Connor Dall. The 'Dawgs would try to climb back into the contest by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. Parker's two-run homerun came in the sixth along with
Harrison Freed's two-run shot.
Four more BU runs would cross home plate in the eighth. Hartnagel hit an RBI double to right center and
Jordan Lucio's second double of the game would score two. The final Bulldog to score was
Zach Jarosz. He came home on an RBI double to centerfield from Houston.
Butler will return to action tomorrow at Hayden Field looking for a win in the getaway game. First pitch is set for 12 PM.
