@ButlerUBaseball No-Hits Purdue in Midweek Contest

Box Score

Five pitchers combined on the seventh recorded no-hitter in Butler history as the Bulldogs downed Purdue, 4-2, Wednesday night in West Lafayette, Ind.

Sam Hubbe (3.0), Quentin Miller (2.0), Luke Johnson (1.2), Jack Pilcher (0.1), and Ottavio Dattolo (2.0) were each part of the no-hitter. Purdue's runs came via five hit by pitches, two walks and one Butler error.

Butler's last no-hitter came on April 10, 2004 with Craig Costello on the mound against Milwaukee. In the course of the game, the Bulldogs' pitching staff registered its 378th strikeout of the season, breaking the school mark held by the 2001 squad. Major leaguer Pat Neshek had 118 strikeouts that season.

With the win, Butler improves to 28-17, doubling the team's win total from 2016. Purdue is now 26-21.

The Bulldogs got on the board just four batters into the contest as clean-up hitter Michael Hartnagel sent a three-run blast over the left field wall. It was Hartnagel's first home run in a Butler uniform. He had three long balls as a freshman at DePauw, but had not belted one in his 1.5 seasons at Butler until Wednesday night.

Purdue scored a single run in the bottom of the second as Mike Madej reached on a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and using two wild pitches to score.

Butler quickly rebounded in the third inning as Gehrig Parker hit a home run over the right field fence and into the Bulldogs' bullpen. It was Parker's fourth home run of the season.

Purdue's biggest threat came in the bottom of the eighth as the Boilermakers loaded the bases with three hit batters to open the frame. Following a strikeout, a sacrifice fly scored the second Purdue run before a groundout ended the inning.

The game was stopped before the first pitch of the bottom of the sixth due to lightning in the area. The delay lasted approximately 85 minutes.

This was the last departure from BIG EAST play for the Bulldogs, who travel to Georgetown for a three-game series that begins Friday before hosting Creighton in a three-game series to finish off the regular season. Butler is still in the hunt for one of four spots in the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament.
