WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Butler baseball team notched their 29th and 30th win of the season with a Sunday sweep at Georgetown. BU took game one 5-0 in a shortened seven-inning format and controlled the action in game two by posting a 7-1 victory.
Garrett Christman and Simon Mathews went head-to-head in game one with each arm tossing the full seven innings for their respective club. Christman picked up the win by limiting the Hoyas to just three hits. He struck out five and only walked two.
The BU bats were able to generate five runs off 10 hits against Mathews who ended the game with six strikeouts and just one walk.
Jordan Lucio and
Michael Hartnagel each recorded two RBI to lead BU to victory. Lucio led all players with three hits on the day.
Butler jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in game one by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Gehrig Parker delivered a two-out single back up the middle of the field and Hartnagel would punish a pitch out over the wall in left field for a two-run home run.
The lead moved to 3-0 in the third after a sac fly from Parker and yet another BU run would cross home plate in the fifth with
Tyler Houston scoring off Lucio's RBI single. The final insurance run of game one was yet another RBI single from Lucio to push the score to 5-0.
Butler's impressive win would trickle over into game two with the Bulldogs getting another outstanding start on the mound followed up with run support.
Sam Hubbe was fantastic in the nightcap by throwing eight full innings and limiting the Hoyas to five hits and one earned run. The final inning of game two would go to
Ottavio Dattolo.
Scoring in the second game would open up in the second inning with BU putting a three-spot on the scoreboard. Hartnagel and Lucio would score the first two runs of the game off a
Duncan Hewitt single and
Alex Horowitz would eventually join them after an RBI single from Christman.
Georgetown scored their first run of the day in the bottom half of the inning, a run that Butler would match in the top of the third with a solo shot from Houston, his 11th homer of the year.
Butler put the game to rest with three more runs off three hits in the top of the ninth. Hewitt scored off a wild pitch and Hartnagel would draw a bases loaded walk for the second run. To no one's surprise, the final run would come home off the bat of Lucio who once again came up with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Houston.
Two wins today against Georgetown really tightens up the conference standings in the BIG EAST. Creighton (10-3), St. John's (11-4) and Seton Hall (10-8) are all in good shape heading into the final weekend of the regular season, but Xavier (7-6), Butler (6-9) Georgetown (4-11) and Villanova (4-11) will keep fighting for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Championship Tournament.
The Hoyas will host the Musketeers next week while Butler hosts Creighton. Villanova will end their regular season at St. John's.
