Butler took control of the action early in set one by jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The early five point advantage made DePaul burn their first timeout of the match. The Bulldogs would move forward to grab a 14-5 lead at the midway point. A 4-0 BU scoring run would add to their lead and once again force DePaul to call a timeout.
Beck and Logan were awesome in the opener as the duo combined for 11 kills. Beck started the match with four kills off her first four attempts. Logan would get in on that action by picking up five kills on her first five swings of the night.
DePaul would never lead in the first set, but they would make things interesting with two 4-0 scoring runs. The first scoring spree moved the score to 14-9 and the second would get the Blue Demons within four points at 17-13. The early deficit proved to be too much to overcome however as Beck moved BU to set point with a kill and a team kill would close the chapter 25-19.
Momentum stayed with the home team at the start of set two with Butler enjoying a 5-1 lead. Four-straight points forced an early DePaul timeout. The second large scoring run of the second set would tell the story of Butler's 2-0 lead in the match. BU went on a 5-0 scoring run to increase the lead to 18-10. A kill from Logan moved Butler to set point and yet another team block ended the action with the Bulldogs on top 25-20.
Set three came down to the wire with DePaul putting up a strong fight. The Blue Demons found their first lead of the night at the start of set three, but a 4-0 BU scoring run would turn into a two-point BU lead at 10-8. DePaul battled back to regain the advantage 16-13, but three-straight Bulldog points after a timeout would knot the score at 16-16.
Neither team could pull away from that point forward as the two clubs came together in crunch time at 22-22. A Butler team block would give them the go-ahead score and cause a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons made some adjustments and posted back-to-back points to reach set point. Logan came alive with the game on the line to deliver yet another kill and a DePaul attack error would move the score to 25-24 in favor of the 'Dawgs. The match would close on the very next serve as
Bri Lilly found
Whitney Beck for the game-winner.
Butler will return to action on Friday, Sept. 29 with a 6 PM match at Georgetown. The following day they will face the Villanova Wildcats at 7 PM.
