In the 105
th minute, Butler keeper
Eric Dick saved the match for the home team with a sprawling save. St. John's Wilhelm Nilsson got free on a corner kick and his shot inside the right post looked inches away from winning the match for St. John's before Dick's dive and left-handed save kept the sheet clean.
On the ensuing attack,
Brandon Guhl took a shot from eight yards out that SJU keeper Andrew Withers was able to save as he ran at Guhl. The rebound came to
Alex Lehtinen and Withers fouled him before he could get a shot off. He was called for a foul and Butler's
Lewis Suddick calmly netted the penalty kick for the win.
Butler controlled possession for much of the first half, but neither team was able to generate many chances. That changed in the second half. The best chance of the match for St. John's came in the 61
st minute as Filippo Ricupati got loose from a Butler defender who stumbled, but his shot from the left side squarely hit the right post.
The Bulldogs had 18 shots compared to 12 for St. John's. Each team had 10 after halftime. The largest discrepancy was in corner kicks, a 14-4 Butler advantage.
Dick made four saves in posting his fourth shutout of the season and 23
rd of his Butler career.
Suddick's penalty kick was his third goal of the season. His other game-winner on the season also came on a penalty kick (against South Florida, Sept. 1). He led the Bulldogs with four shots. Guhl and
Isaac Galliford each had three.
Withers made six saves for SJU, which was led by Ricupati and Ben Roth, who each had three shots.
The Bulldogs are 4-0 in overtime contests so far this season.
Butler continues BIG EAST play Friday, traveling to Georgetown for a 3 p.m. match-up in the nation's capital. The Hoyas were ranked No. 14 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll and are 7-1-1 (2-1 BIG EAST) on the season.
