@ButlerMSoccer Picks Up 3-1 Road BIG EAST Win at DePaul

Consistent attacking in the second half resulted in the Bulldogs' first BIG EAST win of the 2018 season as Butler went up to DePaul and earned a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon.

Three different Bulldogs found the net as Butler improves to 3-8-2 overall and 1-4 in BIG EAST play. DePaul is now 4-7-2 (1-3-1). The Bulldogs are now just one point out of the sixth spot in the BIG EAST standings, which is the dividing line for who makes the BIG EAST Tournament field.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes that saw each team take only four shots, DePaul found the net first with a score in the 60th minute. The Blue Demons played a free kick out to the right and a bouncing cross was put in by Max de Bruijne.

The lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs increased the pressure on the DePaul defense. Eight minutes later, Logan Lee took a ball that was played through and was able to pull DePaul keeper Drew Nuelle out of the frame. The required extra touch eliminated the angle, but resulted in a Butler corner kick. After the ensuing shot was blocked, Butler continued possession in the DePaul box and drew a handball.

Alex Lehtinen stepped up and deposited the penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 in the 68th minute.

The pressure continued in the 70th minute as Michael Peay found the net with a header, but he was called offside after the play was allowed to continue as the Bulldogs had the advantage after a foul.

In the 74th minute, a ball was played through to Brandon Guhl, but Nuelle was able to make a low, diving save in the 1v1 scenario.

Lee scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute as Jack Haywood played a ball to him at the top of the key. As Nuelle came charging off his line, Lee was able to get the shot over his head for the 2-1 lead. It was the first goal of Lee's Butler career. He becomes the 11th Bulldog to find the net this season, including five freshmen.

Guhl added an insurance goal in the 85th minute as Marco Charalambous utilized some fancy footwork to keep possession of the ball up the left side. Guhl finished his cross for his sixth goal of the season.

Each team took 11 shots, but the Bulldogs held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Gabriel Gjergji got the win for the Bulldogs, making four saves. Captain Jared Timmer moved to the back line for this contest. Coach Paul Snape's starting line-up included eight upperclassmen.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday night, traveling to Bloomington, Ind., to face off with the nationally-ranked Hoosiers of Indiana. The 7:30 p.m. kick will air on the Big Ten Network. Butler's next BIG EAST contest is a Saturday trip to Villanova.
