Katie Soderstrom's goal in the 88
th minute was the difference maker in Sunday's match-up vs. DePaul (6-6-2, 2-3-1), as the Bulldogs (10-4-1, 4-1-1) took down the Blue Demons 2-1. Butler is now 7-0 at the Sellick Bowl this year, with their last loss at home coming at the hands of DePaul, 1-0, in 2016.
DePaul was the aggressor in the first half, taking five shots compared to just two by the Bulldogs. Franny Cerny led the Blue Demons with three shots and the first goal of the game in the 39
th minute, marking the first time the Bulldogs had faced a deficit at home.
Mary Tierny carried the ball down the left sideline and made a cross into the middle of the box which found Cerny's head, and the back of the net, to give the Blue Demon's a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Hannah Luedtke ended the period with one save, as did starting keeper for the Blue Demon's Mollie Eriksson.
Elena Gutlove had the shot on goal for Butler.
The Bulldogs turned up the tempo in the second half, applying pressure on the Blue Demons from the opening whistle and dominating the second half.
Halle Stelbasky found the equalizer for Butler in the 54
th minute as she buried a penalty kick to the left side, after being taken down in the box by a DePaul defender.
Butler continued to press, with multiple chances from Gutlove and Stelbasky, but could not find the go-ahead goal. That changed in the 88
th minute as Soderstrom got on the end of a ball played in by
Anja Savich. Soderstrom beat the DePaul defender and slid the ball past Eriksson to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 lead, and win, in the closing minutes.
Eriksson ended the match with five saves as Butler took 11 shots in the second half, compared to just one by DePaul. A corner kick was not taken by either side until the second period. The Bulldogs edged DePaul four corner kicks to one.
Leonie Doege earned the win in goal after coming in at the start of the second half for Butler. She made one save as she posted her 10
th clean sheet of the season.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Oct. 18, hosting Creighton for their final regular season home game. The match is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on BEDN.
