The Bulldogs (11-4-1, 5-1-1) defended their home field once again, topping Creighton (6-9-0, 3-4-0) 1-0 Thursday night. Butler ends the regular season a perfect 8-0 at home.
Second half heroics were the story once again, with
Halle Stelbasky scoring her fifth goal of the season in the 76
th minute to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 edge.
Butler dominated the first half, taking 10 shots compared to just one by Creighton. Starting goalkeeper for the Bulldogs,
Hannah Luedtke, was not tested as the Bluejays' shot was not on goal.
The Bulldog offense had many opportunities in the first half, putting three shots on frame. Creighton keeper Katie Sullivan was the anchor for the Bluejays, making three stops. Butler also held the advantage in corner kicks, taking four in the first half compared to one by Creighton.
The second half was much of the same as the Bulldogs continued to put the pressure on the Creighton backline.
Macy Miller began the scoring play for Butler, winning a ball in the midfield and dishing it off to
Anja Savich. Savich then took a few dribbles and played the ball to Stelbasky, who beat her defender and buried the ball into the right side of the net to give Butler the 1-0 advantage.
Creighton's best opportunity of the second half came shortly after the Bulldog goal, with a Creighton forward getting a head on a ball played into the box.
Leonie Doege, who started the second half in goal for Butler, was able to come off her line and make the stop. That would be Creighton's only opportunity on goal in the game.
The Bulldog defense held on in the closing minutes to seal the 1-0 victory. Butler piled on 11 more shots in the second half, with
Paige Monaghan leading the way with six total shots. The Bulldogs and Bluejays were even in corner kicks during the second half, each taking two.
Butler is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 21, traveling to Georgetown for a battle of the top two teams in the BIG EAST standings. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the match will stream live on BEDN.
