The Butler Bulldogs fell to DePaul in five sets on Wednesday night in Chicago. The Bulldogs move to 5-12, 2-3 in BIG EAST play. With the win, the Blue Demons are now 4-12, 2-3 in the BIG EAST.
DePaul took the first set 25-22 with the Bulldogs falling behind in the beginning of the set and never recovering the lead. The two teams were even 8-8 until DePaul took a 4-1 run to lead the Bulldogs 13-9. The Blue Demons never looked back as they did not trail the remainder of the set.
The Bulldogs were within one at 22-21 but DePaul would take the set on a 3-1 run.
Brooke Gregory led the Bulldogs in the first set with four kills, followed by
Rachel Klitzing with three.
Butler came out firing in the second set, setting the tone for the match with a 10-0 run to take a 12-2 lead. The Bulldogs did not relinquish their lead as they took the second set 25-12 to even the match at one set a piece. Gregory tallied three more kills in the second set and
Bri Lilly exploded for five kills. Â
The Bulldogs kept the momentum into the third set, scoring five points before DePaul scored one. The Blue Demons did not go quietly as they went on a 5-0 scoring run to come within one of the Bulldogs at 8-7. DePaul would even the score at 12-12.
The two teams continued to battle until Butler pulled away at 19-14. The Blue Demons came within one at 24-23, but the Bulldogs took the final point and the set.
Needing a win in the fourth set, DePaul pulled away from the Bulldogs 16-9 after the Bulldogs had previously led 9-6 in the beginning of the set. Butler rallied, coming as close as 19-17, but DePaul would force a game five with the 25-21 win.
Gregory and Lily continued to lead the Bulldogs through set four, each with 12 kills.
Elizabeth LaBue notched 17 digs going into the final set.
In the fifth and final set, DePaul jumped out to a 4-1 lead before the Bulldogs called a timeout. DePaul continued to press the Bulldogs, leading 8-2 in the middle of the fifth. Butler took their final timeout trailing 11-3. The Bulldogs continued to fight back, going on a 8-2 run to make the score 13-11, but DePaul would take the final two points and the match.
Gregory notched 15 kills in the loss while
Shay Horn had 13. LaBue finished the match with 19 digs. Ramseyer had 48 assists for the Bulldogs.
Emma Price and Claire Anderson led the Blue Demons defensively, with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. MacKenzie Savage was the defensive leader with 25 digs. Setter Natalie Hayward had 32 assists.
The Bulldogs are back in action at home this weekend, taking on Georgetown on Friday and Villanova on Saturday. Both matches are set for 6 p.m. and will stream live on the Butler Bulldogs Facebook page.
