The Bulldogs (9-3-1, 3-0-1) and Musketeers (7-6-1, 1-2-1) played to a scoreless draw in Cincinnati Thursday evening. 110 minutes was not enough to separate the two teams as they finished with a double overtime draw for the second straight season.
"This was a fair result. We certainly would have liked to come away with all three points, but this is a tough place to play and it suits Xavier's style very well," co-head coach
Tari St. John said following the match. "We had some gritty performances led by our two centerbacks, Annika and Julia, and created a couple of good opportunities we didn't manage to take."
"Our focus and attention turns to a well-coached St. John's team on Sunday."
Goalkeepers
Hannah Luedtke and
Leonie Doege combined for the Bulldogs' eighth shutout performance this season. Luedtke made one save in the first 45 minutes while Doege was not tested in the final 65 minutes, as the Butler defense did not allow Xavier a shot on goal. Xavier goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro made three saves in her 110 minutes of action.
Butler did not see many opportunities in the first half as Xavier outshot the Bulldogs 5-1. The best chance for BU happened in the 37
th minute as
Breann Pempek sent a ball through the Xavier defense for
Anja Savich, but Bizzarro was able to come off her line and make the stop.
The second half was a different story as Butler came out aggressive, taking nine shots compared to seven by the Musketeers. Xavier made a strong push in the 80
th minute but the Bulldogs were able to weather the storm and keep the clean sheet.
Katie Soderstrom had a chance in the 85
th minute to give the Bulldogs the lead as she put a shot on frame, but Bizzarro once again kept the Bulldogs off the board to push the game into overtime.
The first overtime period between the two teams was a defensive battle as each team only took one shot to send the game into double overtime.
The best chance of the match for the Bulldogs happened in the first minute of the second overtime as
Macy Miller got on the end of a ball in Musketeer territory. Bizzarro came off her line as Miller sent a ball past her that went just wide of the goal. The Bulldogs did not see another clean opportunity on goal and held the Musketeers to two shots to secure the tie.
Xavier held the edge in shots (17-10) and corner kicks (6-1). Miller led the Bulldogs offensively, taking four shots with one on goal. Samantha Dewey and Kenadie Carlson were the leaders for the Musketeers, each taking four shots.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday at St. John's. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the match will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
