St. John's Tops @ButlerWSoccer 2-1 in New York

The Bulldogs (9-4-1, 3-1-1) fell at St. John's (6-7-1, 2-2-1) on Sunday afternoon. The loss marks Butler's first loss in BIG EAST play.

Coming into the match, the Bulldogs had not allowed a goal since starting conference play. The Red Storm used a penalty kick goal in the first half and another goal in the second half to push past the Bulldogs. Both goals were scored by Zsani Kajan for St. John's.

Freshman Anja Savich notched her seventh goal of the season to equalize the game in the first half, but it was not enough as the Bulldog defense couldn't hold off Kajan.

The match began as a back and forth battle with Butler seeing the majority of chances. The Bulldogs edged the Red Storm in shots (4-3) and corners (3-0). St. John's struck first as a Red Storm player was taken down inside the box. Kajan buried the penalty kick to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.

The Bulldogs answered just four minutes later as Savich took a long range shot from outside the 18-yard box that finished in the upper 90, to equalize the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute. The match would stay even going into halftime.

Kajan scored her second goal of the match, which proved to be the game winner, in the 57th minute to give St. John's the 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs remained aggressive in the second half, outshooting the Red Storm 8-3.

The best chance for the Bulldogs to equalize came in the 78th minute as Butler was awarded a penalty kick after Savich was taken down in the box. Paige Monaghan took the kick for Butler, but St. John's goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt dove the right way to make the stop and ultimately earn St. John's the win.

Monaghan led the team in shots, taking four with one landing on target. Cassidy Blacha, Halle Stelbasky, and Katie Soderstrom each took two shots for Butler. Hannah Luedtke and Leonie Doege each made one save for the Bulldogs. Reinhardt ended the match with three.

The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 14, hosting DePaul at 1 p.m. The match will stream live on the Butler Bulldogs Facebook page.
