Visiting Georgetown came away with a 2-0 result over Butler Friday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. Goals in the 18
th and 53
rd minute would prove to be the difference in the contest.
Georgetown improves to 6-3-2 overall on the season, including a 2-1-1 mark in BIG EAST play. Butler falls to 2-7-2 (0-4 BIG EAST).
The Bulldogs controlled the opening 15 minutes of the match before a set piece set up the first score for Georgetown. Kyle Zajec served a free kick into the box and Dylan Nealis headed it in for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Hoya lead. Butler followed that with three good looks over the next five minutes, with two just missing the frame and GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis making a save on the other.
With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, Butler's
Jared Timmer was taken down in the corner of the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Timmer stepped up and took it himself, but Nikopolidis's diving stop preserved the clean sheet for the Hoyas.
In the 53
rd minute, Zajec converted a penalty kick for the Hoyas, an insurance goal that gave the Hoyas a cushion over the final 30-plus minutes.
Georgetown held a narrow edge in shots at 14-12; Butler had six corner kicks to only four for the Hoyas. Timmer led Butler with four shots, followed by three from
Brandon Guhl.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, hosting SIUE at the Sellick Bowl. The match will be streamed live on the Butler Bulldogs Facebook page.
