Twice the Bulldogs battled back from one-goal deficits, but could not do it a third time as SIUE captured a 3-2 win over Butler Tuesday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis.
Lachlan McLean's second goal of the match, which came in the 77
th minute, proved to be the game-winner for the visiting Cougars.
SIUE, which is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, improves to 9-1-2 on the season. Butler falls to 2-8-2.
Butler out-shot SIUE, 13-7, and had eight corner kicks to just one for the Cougars. However, SIUE made each of their opportunities count in taking the win.
McLean opened the scoring in the fifth minute, collecting a Butler turnover just outside the box and getting into a 1v1 situation with Butler keeper
Gabriel Gjergji.
The Bulldogs thought they had netted the tying goal in the 16
th minute as
Brandon Guhl headed in a cross from
Joel Harvey; unfortunately for Butler, the far-side referee waved Guhl offside. It started a rally for the Bulldogs, which saw several chances in the next few minutes.
It would take until the 36
th minute for the Bulldogs to convert an opportunity.
Michael Peay took a touch in the box and then was taken down to draw a penalty kick. Freshman
Jack Haywood was successful on the attempt for the first goal of his Butler career. That 1-1 score would carry through to the second half.
In the 50
th minute, SIUE's Jorge Gonzalez took two touches to get to the corner of the box and then sent a blast to the upper left 90 for a 2-1 lead.
Once again, Butler would respond. Senior
Joe Moulden headed in a
Jared Timmer cross to tie the match in the 69
th minute. It was Moulden's first goal of the season.
The tie game would dissipate just more than seven minutes later as McLean took a short cross from Noah Fetter and used a single volley to push the ball just inside the near post. SIUE tightened up over the final minutes as Butler didn't get a clean look down the stretch.
The Bulldogs return to BIG EAST play Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. (Eastern, 1 p.m. Chicago/Central) kick at DePaul. The Blue Demons will provide a live stream of the action.
