Butler fell for the first time this season, dropping a 69-64 decision to Dayton in the quarterfinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Dayton shot 54 percent in the win.
The Bulldogs are now 3-1 on the season, and will continue Battle 4 Atlantis play over the next two days. Butler's Thanksgiving contest is slated for 9:30 p.m. against Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders lost to No. 4 Virginia Wednesday night following the Butler-Dayton game. Butler's game with Middle Tennessee will air on ESPNU.
Sean McDermott and
Paul Jorgensen led the Bulldogs with 18 points apiece. That marked a career-high for McDermott.
Kamar Baldwin added 11 points and tied a career-high with seven assists.
Dayton came out of the gates strong, making their first six shots to build an early 15-7 lead. Butler would score the next eight points to square the game at 15-15. The efficiency would slow down after the initial burst. Dayton closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the half, 37-26, at halftime. Butler made only 1 of its final 12 attempts from the field in the first half, going scoreless for the final 4:15 of the opening 20 minutes.
Butler struggled from the field throughout the game, finishing at 40 percent overall and 7-of-23 from behind the arc.
In the second half, the Bulldogs spent most of the time trailing by double figures. A Josh Cunningham basket with 4:14 to play matched Dayton's largest lead at 60-45. Butler had one run left in them as they dialed up some full-court pressure. The Bulldogs would score 13 of the next 16 points, capped by a McDermott three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to pull within five at 63-58. The following possession for Dayton ended with a Cunningham dunk as the lead expanded back to seven. The Flyers hit their four free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the win.
Jalen Crutcher led Dayton (now 4-0 on the season) with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Cunningham added 18. The Flyers overcame 16 turnovers by shooting 63 percent (20-32) from inside the arc.
Each team had 34 rebounds.
Nate Fowler led the Bulldogs with seven caroms; McDermott and
Henry Baddley each had six.
