The Bulldogs closed out the fall portion of the 2018-19 schedule with a weekend tournament in Ohio at the Viking Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State University.
Butler's
Michael Dickson and
Mason Dragos each won two matches in the singles draw before having to face off against each other in the quarterfinals. Dragos won that match, 7-6 (3), 6-2. The senior went on to face Cleveland State's Nico Mostardi in the semifinals, falling to the eventual singles champion by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Dickson's first match in the tournament was against Cleveland State's Raul Teichmann. The Butler sophomore won a marathon first-set tiebreaker, 18-16, to take the match 7-6 (16), 6-1.
Freshman
Ryan Roegner went 4-2 in singles play. After an opening round win, Roegner faced Mostardi, who came away with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. Roegner then went into the consolation bracket and won his next three matches to set up a consolation final with Teichmann. Roegner won the first set in a tiebreaker before Teichmann countered with a 6-4 second-set decision to send it to a match tiebreaker. Once again, Teichmann and a Butler player went extra points. This time Teichmann took the match tiebreaker, 13-11.
After losing his first two matches, senior
Lope Adelakun rebounded with two wins to take his portion of the consolation bracket. His final win was a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Youngstown State's Pol Blanco.
Sam Sullivan went 2-2 and
Aviv Ben Shabat posted a 1-1 singles mark for the weekend.
In doubles action, Dickson and Roegner led the Butler charge with a 2-1 mark, falling to the eventual tournament champions from Cleveland State.
Mostardi picked up his title with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Binghamton's Ludovico Cestarollo in the final match.Â
In the doubles main draw, Mostardi and Benjamin Slade captured their title with a 6-2 victory over a Youngstown State duo.
Butler was joined in the brackets by host Cleveland State, Youngstown State, Binghamton, Northern Illinois, and Wright State.
This was Butler's final competition of the fall tournament season. The Bulldogs open the dual match portion of the 2018-19 season Jan. 19 at Louisville and Bellarmine.
