Georgetown came into Hinkle Fieldhouse and captured an 87-83 win Tuesday night. The visiting Hoyas shot 59 percent from the field and held off a late rally from the Bulldogs to take the victory.
 
Georgetown improves to 15-10 overall and 5-9 in BIG EAST play with the win. Butler falls to 17-10 (7-7 BIG EAST).
 
"The team that deserved to win won tonight," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "Georgetown had good energy early and then set the tone in the paint. We were on our heels most of the night. In the second half, we finally picked up our urgency, but we needed that urgency out of the gates."
 
The Hoyas made eight of their first nine shots to build an early 11-point lead and took a five-point lead (44-39) at the half. Marcus Derrickson had 15 of his 27 points in the first half. He went 11-of-13 from the field.
 
Georgetown's lead grew to 58-44 with 14:04 to play, but the Bulldogs would not go quietly as Butler scored six quick points to pull back into the contest. Once again, Georgetown would answer and pushed the lead to a game-high 15 with 7:32 to play. As Butler picked up the defensive pressure, the lead would continue to evaporate.
 
Back-to-back Kamar Baldwin lay-ins (sandwiched around a Sean McDermott steal) trimmed the lead to 84-81 with 1:27 to play. The teams traded two free throws that saw Butler trailing, 86-83, with 52 seconds to play. The Bulldogs forced Georgetown into a miss with 25 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Butler's missed three-pointer was rebounded by Georgetown and Jahvon Blair hit a free throw to seal the game.
 
Kelan Martin led Butler with 22 points and eight rebounds. He became the 41^st player in the history of the BIG EAST to eclipse 1,000 career points in conference games. Tyler Wideman added 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Kamar Baldwin had 16 points, six rebounds, three steals, and tied a career-high with seven assists.
 
Derrickson's 27 points highlighted the Georgetown effort that saw the Hoyas shoot 30-of-51 from the field. Jessie Govan had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Trey Dickerson came off the bench for 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
 
Butler committed only nine turnovers in the game, but made only 5-of-22 from behind the arc, which was uncharacteristic for a Butler team that had made 10 or more three-pointers in five of its last six games.
 
The Bulldogs continue their final homestand of the season Saturday, hosting Providence at Noon. Tickets are still available for the game that will air on FOX. Senior Night is scheduled for Tuesday (Feb. 20) when Creighton visits Hinkle Fieldhouse.
