INDIANAPOLIS – Seton Hall swept Butler this weekend by claiming a 7-5 win over the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon. Casey Dana hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Pirates to victory.
Dana went 2-for-3 from the plate with a double, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Additional RBIs went to Tyler Shedler-McAvoy and Rob Dadona.
Butler was led by
Garrett Christman and
Connor Dall. Christman hit a triple to right field to record two RBI and Dall matched that output with two hits on the day.
BU won the hits column 10-8, but left nine runners on base compared to Seton Hall's four. The game featured three home runs with Shedler-McAvoy hitting his first of the season and
Tyler Houston connecting on his fourth.
Scoring opened up in the first with Christman's triple to right field. Ryan Ramiz tried to make a diving play, but the ball would get behind him and roll to the warning track.
Gehrig Parker and
Tyler Houston would score easily, but
Michael Hartnagel would lose his footing and be thrown out at home.
A costly BU error in the third would allow Seton Hall to tie the game. Dana led off with a double and would score on a BU fielding error. Dadona would send a ball into deep leftfield for a sacrifice that scored Hood.
The two evenly matched teams would trade runs in the fourth. Molina scored for SHU on a groundout from Shedler-McAvoy. Houston would tie the game in the bottom of four with his solo shot over the wall in left.
Things looked promising for BU in the fifth as Dall returned to the plate with a big RBI single to left that scored Hartnagel. Shedler-McAvoy would return the favor with a solo home run in the seventh to bring the teams even at 4-4.
Dall tried to win the game again in the seventh with a single through the left side that scored Parker, but the three-run bomb by Dana in the eighth moved SHU into the win column.
With the loss, Butler moves to 24-11 on the year with a 4-4 record against BIG EAST opponents. Seton Hall is now 17-14-1 on the year with a 5-1 league record.
BU will return to action on Tuesday with a game at IU Kokomo. Their next home contest will follow on Wednesday against Miami Ohio.
