@ButlerSoftball Tops IUPUI 7-3 in Home Finale

The Bulldogs topped IUPUI 7-3 Wednesday afternoon in their last non-conference game of the season. Butler has won seven of their last eight and are now 20-22 heading into their last two weekends of BIG EAST play.

Butler outhit the Jaguars with 11 compared to IUPUI's six, and scattered 7 runs over four innings.

The Jaguars struck first after a runner scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. Butler answered in the bottom of the second as Payton Longest reached base on a walk followed by an Elyse Babb single. A wild pitch moved Longest to third and an error by the Jaguars' third basemen scored Longest.

After IUPUI had tied the game in the top of the third, Butler scored two of their own to take a 4-2 lead. Kaitlin Doud started the inning with a single to center field, followed by a Sarah Dixon single. Pinch hitter Ashley Post walked, loading the bases for Longest. Longest singled, scoring Doud. Another error by the Jaguars' third basemen scored Post.

Butler defense shut down the Jaguars in the fourth and fifth and then the offense put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Longest led off the inning with a walk, followed by two singles from Sammie Andersen and Claire Gilliland, with Gilliland scoring Longest from second base. Andersen reached third base on a wild pitch and Alyssa Garcia's squeeze bunt would score her.

The Jaguars' rally in the sixth fell short with IUPUI only scoring one run off a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs scored two more in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI double from Andersen and an IUPUI error, scoring Ambry Turpen, who reached base on a single. Gabbi Schnaiter, who came on in relief in the top of the sixth, shut the Jaguars down to earn the save.

Alyssa Graves started in the circle for the Bulldogs, going 2.1 innings. Kaitlin Doud (10-6) came on in the top of third to earn the win. The loss for IUPUI went to Kristin London (0-2).

The Bulldogs wrap up their season traveling to DePaul on April 28 and St. John's on May 5 to fight for a spot in the BIG EAST tournament. Butler's series against St. John's wills steam live on BEDN.
