Georgetown pulled out a 4-3 win over Butler in the 2018 BIG EAST Quarterfinals. It was the most suspenseful match of the season for the Bulldogs, who couldn't quite pull out a dramatic finish that was the basis of their run to the 2017 tournament.

Friday's match in Cayce, S.C., pitted the fourth-seeded Bulldogs and the fifth-seeded Hoyas in the opening round of the BIG EAST's postseason tournament.

The Bulldogs got out to a strong start by taking the doubles point. Mason Dragos and Aviv Ben Shabat combined for a 6-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, while Michael Dickson and Spencer Lang clinched the point with a 6-4 win on the second court.

Dickson got the singles play off on the right foot with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Connor Lee at No. 3 singles. After the Hoyas pulled within, 2-1, with a win at No. 5 singles, Dragos extended the Bulldogs' lead to 3-1 with a straight-set win on the first court. Dragos defeated Peter Beatty, 7-5, 6-3.

Georgetown then tied the match with straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.

At 3-3, the match came down to No. 6 singles and Butler's Ari Gerstein against Charlie Sharton. Charton took the first set before Gerstein won, 6-1, in the second set to push the match to a deciding set. Sharton took 3-0 and 5-2 leads before Gerstein climbed all the way back to 5-5. However, Sharton was able to win the next two games to secure the match and the team result.

The Butler season ends with a record of 14-7. The Bulldogs' roster will return intact next season as Butler's six-member junior class will become seniors.

Georgetown advances to Saturday's semifinals and a match with top-seeded DePaul.
