Freed Grand Slam Helps @ButlerUBaseball Defeat Georgetown 15-8

INDIANAPOLISHarrison Freed hit a grand slam to straight-away centerfield to spark a Butler comeback that would result in a 15-8 win. Butler faced a 7-2 deficit after the top of the third inning, but the Bulldogs would fight back to claim their 30th win of the regular season. The 2018 team now becomes just the sixth group in BU history to reach 30-plus wins in a single season.

The BU win snapped an eight-game winning streak for Georgetown. The Hoyas are now 7-6 in BIG EAST action while Butler improves to 7-5. Butler got the win on Friday despite recording two less hits than their opponent (14-12).

Butler home runs mixed with some Georgetown errors allowed the home team to come out on top. Gehrig Parker opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a one out, two-run home run to right field.

The Hoyas responded by scoring four runs off five hits in the top of the second inning. Michael DeRenzi and Austin Shirley posted the first two RBI of the game for Georgetown and Ryan Davis would cap off the scoring with a two-RBI single through the left side.

Georgetown added to their lead in the top of the third inning by scoring three runs off four hits. Shirley was credited with two RBI on his single through the right side and Bernstein would single to center to score Shirley. The two-out rally would signal the end of the day for Connor Mitchell who was replaced on the mound by Connor Schultz.

Schultz was an impact player for BU out of the bullpen and would be credited with his third win of the season (3-1). The true freshman tossed 4.1 innings and would limit Georgetown to one run off four hits.

Gehrig Parker and Harrison Freed would shoulder the load offensively. Parker went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Freed came up with the biggest hit of the day to record four RBI. He ended the game with two total hits and three runs scored.

Freed was responsible for getting Butler right back in the game with a grand slam in the bottom of the third. Houston, Hartnagel and Christman would all touch home plate on the homer.

Duncan Hewitt nearly matched Freed with a hard hit ball to center that resulted in a stand-up double to lead off the fourth. Starter Jack Cushing would be replaced on the mound by Kevin Superko after the extra-base hit.

Hewitt would round third base and come around to score the game-tying run on a James Gargano single through the left side of the infield. BU would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a sac fly from Parker.

Freed would come around to score another run in the bottom of the fifth. He walked with one out and would move around to third on a base hit from Connor Dall. A wild pitch from Superko would hit the backstop and Freed would score standing to make the score 9-7.

BU dodged a bullet in the sixth to keep the lead. The Hoyas loaded the bases with one out and Ryan Weisenberg at the plate. Weisenberg hit a ball hard back up the middle of the field, but Zach Jarosz was playing towards the bag. The line drive ended up in Jarosz's glove and the sophomore would step on the bag to double up the runner.

The final Hoya run came home in the seventh inning off a solo home run from Ryan Davis. Any chance of a comeback would go up in smoke as BU recorded six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Georgetown committed four errors in the frame. The half inning was highlighted by an RBI double to right from senior Michael Hartnagel.
