Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Bree Williams

No. 25 @ButlerWSoccer Remains Unbeaten; Defeats Dayton 1-0

The Butler women's soccer team notched their fourth win of the season, taking down the Dayton Flyers 1-0 on Thursday night. The Bulldogs (4-0) kept a clean sheet for the second time this season and have not trailed once in 2018.

"It is for good reason that Dayton has such a great home record, it is a very difficult place to play," co-head coach Tari St. John said following the match. "With that said, tremendous road win for the team."

"I thought we could have made it easier for ourselves to see the game out by taking a few more of the chances we had in the first half. We kept it close and Dayton is a team that will fight."

The Bulldogs controlled the majority of the game, as Dayton played a defensive game to try and shutout the Butler offense. Butler had multiple opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Flyers 10 to one. Starting goalkeeper Hannah Luedtke (4-0) was not tested in the first half as the Flyers did not take a shot on goal.

Persistence paid off in the 43rd minute with Katie Soderstrom taking a free kick near the goal line on the outside of the box. The freshman placed the ball in a perfect spot as it ricocheted off a Flyer defender and goalkeeper, into the back of the net.

"Katie served a near perfect free kick for the goal. It goes down as an own goal, but credit goes to Paige Monaghan for earning the free kick and to Katie's service," St. John said.

Dayton was more aggressive during the second half, taking seven shots compared to Butler's four. Leonie Doege played the second half in goal for the Bulldogs, shutting the Flyers out and making three saves.

Seven different Bulldogs took shots for Butler, with six shots of Butler's 14 on goal.  Monaghan led the team, taking five, two of which were on goal.

The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, Sept. 2, traveling to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the No. 19 Jayhawks. The top 25 match-up is set to kick off at 8PM and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
