The No. 25 Butler Bulldogs lost their first match of the season Sunday night, falling 1-0 at No. 19 Kansas. The Jayhawks (5-0-1) used a goal in the 84
th minute to push past the Bulldogs and remain undefeated on the season. Butler now sits at 4-1-0.
"That was a great match between two good teams, not much separated us. Kansas executed on a set piece and deservedly won the game," Co-head coach
Tari St. John said following the match. "A very good game of soccer and we will take away a lot of pieces to work on that we need to improve moving forward."
"It was unfortunate as the goal came at a time we were pressing for a winner. We had missed an open goal ourselves and were putting Kansas under a lot of pressure. But again, Kansas played a great game tonight and capitalized on their late chance."
The first half was a defensive battle on each end, with only four shots taken between the two teams. Kansas edged the Bulldogs with three shots, while Butler only took one shot the first 45 minutes.
Starting Butler goalkeeper
Hannah Luedtke made one save in the first half as did Jayhawks' keeper Sarah Peters. Neither team conceded a corner kick in the first half.
Both teams came out aggressive in the second half, as Butler took five shots and Kansas took seven. The best chance for the Bulldogs came in the 55
th minute when
Katie Soderstrom played a ball into the box for
Morgan Kloosterman. The keeper came out to challenge Kloosterman who shot the ball just past the left goal post.
The momentum shifted to Kansas as the Jayhawks had multiple chances in the 61
st and 67
th minutes off dangerous balls played into the box.
Leonie Doege started the second half in goal for the Bulldogs, making two saves.
The stalemate was broken in the 84
th minute as the Jayhawks earned a corner kick. Bri Amos played the ball into the box and Katie McClure finished the ball into the right side of the net after it ricocheted off a Bulldog defender.
Butler battled for the remaining five minutes of the match, but could not find the back of the net. This is the first match the Bulldogs have trailed all season.
The Bulldogs are back in action with a two-game home stand, hosting Evansville on Thursday at 7PM. Northern Kentucky will make the trip to Indianapolis on Sunday for a 1PM tilt. Both games will stream on Facebook Live.
