No. 23 Butler lost a hard-fought battle to the Baylor Bears Thursday night, 2-0. The Bulldogs move to 6-2-0 on the season. With the win, Baylor is now 6-3-0.
The Bears used a goal late in the first half and early in the second half to overpower the Bulldogs. This is just the second game all season that Butler has been shutout, and the first game that Butler has conceded two goals.
The beginning of the first half was controlled by Baylor, who were on the attack for the first ten minutes. Momentum shifted to Butler as the Bulldogs received a corner kick in the 11
th minute which resulted in
Kyra Cooke taking a shot on goal. Butler's best opportunity in the first half happened in the 25
th minute as
Amanda Kowalski took a shot on goal. Baylor's starting keeper Jennifer Wandt made a diving save to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Baylor broke through in the 37
th minute as Jackie Crowther crossed the ball into the box from the left sideline. Guiliana Cunningham was there to finish the ball past starting goalkeeper for the Bulldogs,
Hannah Luedtke. Luedtke would finish the first half with three saves, receiving the loss for the Bulldogs. She is now 6-1-0 on the season.
The 1-0 deficit for the Bulldogs did not last long into the second half as Baylor quickly put another in the back of the net in the 49
th minute. Raegan Padgett chipped the ball past
Leonie Doege, starting keeper for the Bulldogs in the second half, after being cleared by a Butler defender.
The Bulldogs' best chance in the second half came in the 68
th minute as Kowalski crossed the ball into the box for
Celia Gaynor whose shot was blocked by a Baylor defender.
Wandt made one save for Baylor and moves to 4-2-0. The Bulldogs and Bears were even in shots, with both teams taking 11. Baylor edged the Bulldogs in corner kicks, taking five compared to four by Butler.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday, taking on the TCU Horned Frogs. Kickoff is slated for 2PM EST.
