#10 Creighton Escapes @ButlerVB in Five Sets

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler had #10 Creighton on the ropes with a 2-1 lead inside Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday night, but the Bluejays would earn their 11th win of the season after picking up wins in the fourth and fifth set (19-25, 26-24, 30-28, 18-25, 11-15). BU sophomore Natalie Ravenell led the 'Dawgs in the match with 10 kills, nine digs and nine blocks.

Ravenell was knocking on the door of a triple-double with her outstanding performance vs. the nationally-ranked Bluejays. Joining her on the attack was Bri Lilly with 10 kills, Shay Horn with 10 kills and Melody Davidson with eight. Davidson hit .421 for the match by collecting eight kills off just 19 attempts with zero errors.

Lilly and Ravenell were just as impressive defensively, helping Butler record 16.5 team blocks. Lilly was in the box score with a team-high 11 blocks and Ravenell ranked second with nine. Davidson chipped in with four and Rachel Klitzing was in on the action with three.

Klitzing, Brooke Gregory and setter Megan Ramseyer rounded out the kill total with six, four and four respectively. Ramseyer recorded a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. The BU dig leader was Emma Milstead with 14.

Creighton setter Madelyn Cole spread the ball around in the first set which led to four different Bluejays recording two kills each. Butler scored three-straight points out of a timeout to move the scoreboard to 16-13. Creighton would counter with a timeout of their own, but the strategy didn't pay off as BU pushed the run to five-straight with two more after the stoppage. The turning point came shortly after however with a Creighton 5-1 scoring run that made the score 21-16. CU would go up on top 1-0 after a BU service error 25-19.

Set two evened the match at 1-1 with Butler claiming the 26-24 win. The Bulldogs led 15-9 early, but Creighton would climb back into the scene at 21-21. Back-to-back kills from Gregory would knot the score at 23-23 and the 'Dawgs would find the win after a Lilly kill and a CU attack error.

BU turned up the heat on homecoming weekend by winning the third set 30-28. The two evenly matched teams could not be separated in this one as they came down the stretch deadlocked at 25-25. A costly service error from Creighton would give BU the one-point cushion and Ravenell would slam a kill to the ground off a Milstead assist for the win.

Creighton avoided defeat by winning the fourth set 25-18. Outside hitter Taryn Kloth recorded eight of her team-high 26 kills to lead CU to victory. An early 10-10 tie would turn into a 16-11 Creighton advantage. The Bluejays never looked back, forcing the fifth set.

The deciding set looked promising at the start with Butler owning a 5-2 lead. The two teams switched sides with Butler leading 8-6, but the score would quickly wrap up at 9-9. The final tie would come at 10-10 and CU would outscore BU 5-1 in the closing stages to avoid the upset.

Butler will return to action tomorrow with a 6 PM match vs. Providence.
