@ButlerWSoccer Finishes Homecoming Week Undefeated; Tops Providence 1-0

The Bulldogs (9-3-0, 3-0-0) posted their third straight BIG EAST win Sunday afternoon, defeating the Providence Friars (7-4-1, 1-2-0) 1-0. Senior defender Madison Toth scored the first goal of her Butler career in the 56th minute to give Butler the edge over Providence.

Butler controlled much of the possession in the first half, taking five shots, two of which were on goal. Starting keeper for the Friars Shelby Hogan made two saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board. The Butler defense held Providence to just two shots in the first 45 minutes, with zero on frame.

The best chance for the Bulldogs in the first half came in the 25th minute as Halle Stelbasky broke free from the Friar defenders to put a shot on goal. Hogan came up with the save to keep the game tied at 0-0.

The stalemate didn't continue long into the second half as Toth found the back of the net in the 55th minute. The defender put the ball into the right side of the goal off a deflection from a Friar defender.

Butler continued to attack the Friar defense, taking 10 more shots in the second half and putting five of those on frame. Logan ended the game with six saves.

The Friars tried to break through the stingy Butler defense but the Bulldogs thwarted Providence's last push in the final five minutes of the match. Providence took three more shots in the second half but did not put any on frame.

The 1-0 victory marks the the seventh shutout of the season for the Bulldogs. Butler goalkeepers Hannah Luedtke and Leonie Doege combined for the shutout, with Doege coming in to start the second half, receiving her first win of 2018.

The Bulldogs look to continue their BIG EAST success on the road next week, taking on Xavier and St. Johns. Butler makes the trip to Cincinnati on Oct. 4 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The match at St. John's is set for Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. The match will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
