INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs won the first two sets against St. John's and would come out on top in set four 25-23 to claim their sixth win of the season. They improve to 3-2 in the BIG EAST standings.
How It Happened
The 'Dawgs would strike first in set one with a 25-21 win. BU went on a 5-0 scoring run in the early stages of the night to grab a 7-3 lead.
Melody Davidson and
Shay Horn sparked the scoring spree with two kills each.
The lead would shrink to 11-10, but the 'Dawgs would regroup and move ahead 17-13 after a 3-0 run. St. John's called a second timeout, but the strategy would not work as Butler added two more points after the stoppage.
The Red Storm continued to battle inside Hinkle Fieldhouse and a 5-0 run would get them right back in the action at 20-19.The 'Dawgs stood tall on their home court and would end the opening set on a 3-0 run to win 25-21.
Set two was wild with St. John's scoring the first three points and Butler following with the next three. A similar scenario would play out midway through the set with St. John's going on a 5-0 run that resulted in a 14-10 lead. BU didn't flinch and came back to score four-straight knotting the score at 14-14.
Brittany Robinson broke a 19-19 tie with her first kill of the night. BU would quickly go up 2-0 in the match by scoring five of the next six points.
Jillian Ziemba had the serve with the game on the line and delivered back-to-back aces moving the 'Dawgs to set point. The set-winning kill was credited to Davidson off the feed from
Megan Ramseyer.
Thoughts of a BU sweep would quickly vanish with St. John's opening up a 14-3 lead in the third. They would win the set 25-12.
Butler jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set and would hold the upper hand until St. John's tied the action at 19-19. The Red Storm went on a 6-0 scoring run to take their first lead of the set at 20-19. BU burned a timeout, and scored their 20th point off a kill from
Brooke Gregory.
BU got to match point on kill from Robinson and they would secure the 3-1 victory on a team block from Davidson and Robinson.
