The Butler women's soccer team down their second BIG EAST opponent of the week, topping St. John's 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Sellick Bowl. The Bulldogs move up to 8-4-2 (3-1-1) while the Red Storm falls to 4-10-0 (1-4-0).
"I thought today our defensive display was excellent," said co-head coach
Rob Alman. "Two shutouts in a row against two teams that have some really dangerous attacking players. So the dedication to the defensive game-plan today was fantastic and the players executed that really well."
How It Happened:
The Bulldogs weathered the Red Storm's attack through the first 45 minutes of play, claiming a 7-5 advantage on shots.
Four Bulldogs took lethal strikes on goal in the first half, but St. John's keeper, Meredith Reinhardt, made save after save to keep Butler off the scoreboard.
In the second period, both teams came out firing, taking four shots apiece in 30 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs finally cracked through the Red Storm's armor in the 78
th minute.
Anja Savich beat her defender on the left side of the box, taking a shot at the net and forcing Reinhardt to make a diving block.
Celia Gaynor took a close range strike off the rebound that Reinhardt was able to deflect, but Soderstrom snuck in the left side of the box to finish the score.
The Bulldogs held onto the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the second half, earning their fourth home win of the season.
Notable Stats:
- Soderstrom nailed her seventh goal of the season to tie the team lead with Savich
