Annika Schmidt was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 21. Schmidt helped the Bulldogs force a scoreless draw against No. 11 Georgetown (10-2-3, 4-0-2) on Sunday (Oct. 20).
The senior defender and the rest of the back line limited the dominant Georgetown offense to just one shot on goal throughout the 2OT match. It marked the first time in 10 matches the nationally ranked Hoyas were held without a goal. The Bulldogs are the first BIG EAST team to shutout Georgetown this season.
Schmidt played all 110 minutes for the Bulldogs and added one shot on target in the match. She has started every game for the Bulldogs and has played all but 49 minutes of the 2019 season.
This is Schmidt's second player of the week accolade this season and the fourth of her career. Schmidt is a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team honoree (2017 and 2018) and a two-time Preseason BIG EAST selection (2018 and 2019).
Butler moved to 8-4-3 overall with a 3-1-2 mark in league play. The Bulldogs sit at third place in the BIG EAST rankings with three conference match-ups remaining.
