@ButlerMSoccer's BIG EAST Run Ends as Top-Seeded Georgetown Advances on PKs

Butler's run in the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament ended Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital, as top-seeded Georgetown advanced on penalty kicks. The two teams played 110 minutes and we knotted at 2-2 before PKs decided the outcome.

With the result, officially a draw, Butler is now 11-6-2 on the season. Georgetown, the No. 3 team in this week's national poll, is now 14-1-3, and will host the winner of tonight's St. John's-Providence semifinal in the BIG EAST title match Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 25 in the NCAA RPI metric entering the semifinal, have a solid résumé and are hopeful for a berth in the 2019 NCAA Tournament field. The NCAA will announce the bracket Monday afternoon.

Georgetown freshman Dante Polvara's converted PK proved to be the deciding kick as the Hoyas advanced, 4-3. Each team converted their first three attempts before a Butler miss in the fourth round. Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji responded by making a diving save to his left on Jack Beer's attempt. Another Butler miss in the fifth round set up Polvara's heroics.

The Bulldogs twice were able to overcome one-goal deficits in regulation.

In the seventh minute, senior Alex Lehtinen collected a deflected pass and sent a low, left-footed shot by Georgetown keeper Tomas Romero to tie the match 1-1. That came after Sean Zawadzki got the Hoyas on the board first in the third minute.

Georgetown took a 2-1 lead on an Achara penalty kick in the 51st minute, but once again the Bulldogs had an answer. On a counter-attack, Jack Haywood played a ball to Brandon Guhl, and the senior delivered a goal from the right side. It was his team-best ninth goal of the season.

With two assists Wednesday, Haywood now leads the BIG EAST with nine.

Each team had additional opportunities. Guhl found the crossbar from 12 yards out in the 28th minute as Butler attempted to take a 2-1 lead.

In the waning seconds of the first overtime period, Chris Le sprinted to the sideline to launch a long throw-in toward the Butler goal. Two Hoyas were able to get a head on the ball, which crossed the line with a second remaining in the period, but the first Georgetown offensive player was called for a foul, nullifying the play.

In the 105th minute, a corner kick and ensuing pass in front of the net found Derek Dodson all alone with the ball on his right foot. His quick shot went straight at Gjergji, who was able to make a reflex save to keep the match tied.

Georgetown had a 21-10 advantage in shots, and took 11 corner kicks to just two for the Bulldogs. Butler was able to withstand almost everything that the host Hoyas threw at them for 110 minutes.

Gjergji made seven saves during regulation and the overtime sessions.
