Kamar Baldwin's pull-up jumper with eight seconds to go proved to be the game-winner as the Bulldogs pulled out a 68-67 win over Stanford to claim the championship trophy of the 2019 Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City. Butler is now 7-0 on the season.

Baldwin's 22 points included 17 of the team's final 20, and all 17 of those came in the final 8:34 of the contest. He was named Tournament MVP.

That was about the time that Sean McDermott returned to the floor after being helped off the court with an ankle injury with 3:41 remaining in the first half. Stanford closed the first half on a 10-1 once McDermott exited to tie the game at 29-29 entering the final 20 minutes.

McDermott's re-entry provided an immediate emotional boost to the Bulldogs.

Five straight makes, including four by Baldwin, gave the Bulldogs a 10-0 run that turned a three-point deficit into a 58-51 lead with 5:53 to play. Stanford would not go quickly as eight straight points knotted the game at 62-62 with 2:49 to play.

Four from Baldwin were answered by five from Stanford, who took a 67-66 lead on Bryce Wills' dunk with 21 seconds remaining.

That set up the Baldwin's game-winner and a frantic defensive possession that saw the Bulldogs smother Tyrell Terry's attempt in the lane to win the game.

"He does this every day at practice," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan about his senior guard. "He's the same competitor and he's a winner. He's an everyday guy and puts in the work. We have a ton of trust in him."

The Bulldogs overcame a cold shooting night (6-of-23 from three-point range) to take the win. Stanford shot 53 percent from the field, and 9-of-20 from behind the arc.

Butler out-rebounded the Cardinal, 31-23, and committed only 11 turnovers. Bryce Nze had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Bryce Golden added 12 points. Aaron Thompson had nine points and four assists, including six straight as part of an 8-0 run that erased Stanford's largest lead of the night at 47-40.

Golden, who along with Baldwin, led the Bulldogs with 13 points in Monday night's semifinal win over Missouri, joined Baldwin on the All-Tournament Team.

Terry scored 21 points and Oscar da Silva 19 for Stanford, which lost for the first time after a 7-1 start.

The Bulldogs have a week off before traveling to Ole Miss for a Tuesday (Dec. 3) game.
