@ButlerMSoccer Wins Regular Season Finale vs. Xavier, Earns BIG EAST Tournament Berth

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler scored one goal in each half to record a 2-1 victory over the visiting Xavier Musketeers on Wednesday afternoon to end the regular season with a 10-6-1 overall record. The victory moved BU to 4-4-1 in the conference standings. Those 13 points secure the Bulldogs the No. 5 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament.

As the No. 5 seed, Butler will travel to fourth-seeded Creighton Saturday in a quarterfinal match-up.

Brandon Guhl and Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. were the Bulldog goal scorers in the victory over Xavier. Guhl scored his eighth goal of the season in the eighth minute off an assist from Alex Lehtinen.

The Bulldogs took a corner kick on the north end of the field to set up the first score. Lehtinen would send the ball over to Guhl on the left side of the field. He beat the keeper to the left side for the early 1-0 advantage.

The equalizer in the first half was set up by a terrific, long-pass from Jacob Bernsen to a streaking Samson Sergi. Sergi got past the final line of defense and netted his eighth goal of the year in the 32nd minute of the opening half.

The game-winning goal came off a double assist that started with Lehtinen pushing the ball up the far sideline in front of the team benches. Lehtinen got the ball up-field to Guhl with some room to run. Guhl would send a ball back inside to Cabrera, Jr. The true freshman collected possession and would finish in the back of the net in the 52nd minute.

Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji made five saves in posting the win. Xavier had a 12-9 advantage in shots.

Xavier ends their season 8-8-1 (3-6 BIG EAST) outside the six-team BIG EAST Tournament.
