Annika Schmidt and
Katie Soderstrom have been named to the 2019 Academic All-District® First Team, CoSIDA announced Thursday, Nov. 7. The 2019 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Schmidt, a redshirt senior, started 17 games in the Bulldog back line this season, anchoring a defense that posted nine shutouts, earning her All-BIG EAST First Team Honors. The defender scored two goals this season, including the Bulldogs single goal against (former) No. 15 Wisconsin. Schmidt was honored twice this season as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Off the field, Schmidt is a Sports Media major with a 3.98 cumulative GPA.
Soderstrom, a sophomore forward, started all 19 match-ups this season, leading the team with 23 points of seven assists and eight goals. Soderstrom had back-to-back BIG EAST game-winning goals in the 1-0 OT win at Creighton and the 1-0 win over St. John's. She also had a six-point game against IUPUI earlier in the season, tabbing two goals and two assists in the 4-1 win. Soderstrom was awarded BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week accolades twice in her sophomore campaign. In the classroom, Soderstrom is an Elementary Education major with a 3.97 cumulative GPA.
The Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. Both Schmidt and Soderstrom were one of four athletes in District 5 for their respective positions.
The Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
