NEW YORK – Butler junior
Lauryn Padgett and DePaul freshman Vito Tonejc have been selected as the BIG EAST Female and Male Tennis Athletes of the Week, respectively. Padgett helped the Bulldogs defeat Southern Indiana in their lone match of the past week, while Tonejc captured multiple wins for DePaul in the Blue Demons' trip to South Florida over the weekend.
BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week
Lauryn Padgett, Butler, Jr. (Carmel, Ind.)
Padgett guided the Bulldogs to a win over the Screaming Eagles, 6-1, without dropping a set. The junior won 6-0 at the No. 2 doubles position alongside teammate
Sarah Monesmith, defeating USI's Shelby Braselton and Kylie Skepnek. She followed that up with a decisive singles victory over Rachel Anderson in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 3 court.
BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week
Vito Tonejc, DePaul, Fr. (Zagreb, Croatia)
Tonejc went 4-2 over the weekend as DePaul picked up a win over Tennessee Tech on Sunday during a trip to Boca Raton, Fla. He teamed up with his brother Fran Tonejc to secure victories at the No. 2 doubles spot in two matches. They defeated Stetson's Coilin MacNamara and Clement Hamel, along with Elias Grubert and Wenceslao Albin of Tennessee Tech—both 6-4. In singles play, Tonejc outdid Hatter Louis Gorregues 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot. He picked up another win against Golden Eagle Riku Kubota on the No. 2 court, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
