Butler finished play at the 2019 Hilltopper Classic with its second consecutive 1-1 day. The Bulldogs defeated Cleveland State, 9-6, in the first game of the day before falling to Indiana State, 5-0.
With the results, Butler is now 6-8 on the season. The last two days of competition were hosted by Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky.
In the opener against Cleveland State, all nine of Butler's runs came in the first two innings. Butler's five-run first included all runs coming with two outs.
Elyse Babb had a two-run single followed by a three-run home run by
Madi Christiansen over the right field wall. Christiansen's home run was the first of the season and the third of her Butler career.
Butler's four runs in the second inning included RBI singles from
Karli Ricketts and Babb, sandwiched around an RBI double from
Claire Gilliland. Those three Bulldogs, along with Christiansen, each had a pair of hits for Butler. Both of Gilliland's hits were doubles.
Both Butler and Cleveland State each had 12 hits on the afternoon. The Vikings' six runs came over the final four innings, including three in the bottom of the seventh.
Madison Seigworth got the start and allowed two unearned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Kaitlin Doud came on in relief and picked up the win (2-2).
For the second day in a row, the Bulldogs ran into a hot pitcher in the second game of the day. One day after beating Indiana State, 6-4, the Bulldogs fell to the Sycamores, 5-0.
Christina Candotti had two of the Bulldogs' four hits.
Indiana State scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added a single run in the fourth. Gabbi Schnaite r went the distance for ISU, striking out five Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs are off until March 5, when the team travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a match-up with Indiana.
