The Bulldogs improved their record to 8-10 on Tuesday morning, defeating Army 6-3 in extra innings at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. Butler used a three-run ninth inning to take home the victory.
Butler struck first in the second inning on an RBI double from
Kaitlin Doud to score
Sammy Andersen. Andersen reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Maddie Moore.
Army would not score until the fifth inning, plating two to take a 2-1 lead to close out the fifth. After Army scored a run off a double to left center,
Alyssa Graves entered the game to replace starting pitcher, Doud, with two outs and two runners on base. Army was able to score one more before Graves got out of the inning with a ground out to first base.
Moore would quickly answer with a homerun to left field in the sixth to tie the game back up at 2-2.
After a scoreless seventh, the game would go into extra innings to decide the outcome. Both teams scored a run in the eighth, with Andersen reaching home plate for the second time off a bunt from
Madi Christiansen.
Butler exploded for three runs in the top of the ninth, with
Lauren Fey and
Karli Ricketts getting it done at the plate. Fey began the rally with a double down the left field line to score
Bri Avery. Ricketts followed it up with a double to left field, scoring Fey and
Jenna Foreman.
Those three runs would decide the game as Graves shut down Army in the bottom of the inning to take the win. The sophomore is now 3-3 on the year.
Macey Newbary (3-2) received the loss in the circle for Army, coming in in the seventh to take over for starting pitcher Jolie Doung. Offensively, Army was led by Ally Snelling and Maddie Kim, each with two hits and one RBI.
Ricketts had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs, while Fey and Doud added two hits.
