@ButlerSoftball Falls to No. 21 Minnesota and USF in Friday Action

The Bulldogs continued play in Tampa, Fla., Friday as part of a weekend event hosted by South Florida. Butler fought two quality opponents in competitive games, but ended up falling against both nationally-ranked Minnesota and host USF.

Following the day's results, Butler is 8-14 on the season.

Butler went toe-to-toe with the 21st-ranked Golden Gophers, ultimately dropping a 3-2 decision as Minnesota pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

The game was scoreless until Minnesota was able to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Butler responded in the top half of the seventh. Freshman Lauren Fey singled to lead off the frame and catcher Sammy Andersen followed with her second home run of the season, sending a shot over the left field fence.

Minnesota's walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh came on a one-out error.

Alyssa Graves took the tough loss (3-5), striking out 10 batters in six-plus innings of work. Those strikeouts contributed to 10 stranded Minnesota runners throughout the contest.

Sydney Smith got the win for Minnesota, allowing three hits and the two runs in her complete game. She struck out 11 Bulldogs.

Host South Florida came away with a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs in the second game of the day. USF put up two-run innings in both the third and sixth frames.

Butler's run came in the top of the seventh as Jenna Foreman reached on an error and was singled in by Karli Ricketts later in the inning.

Ricketts pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs, allowing the four runs on eight hits.

Butler had seven hits in the game, including three from Ricketts. Foreman stole her 17th base of the season in the contest.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday with a pair of games in Tampa. Butler will meet Princeton at 9 a.m., followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest with North Florida.
