The Bulldogs closed their time in Florida with an extra-inning win over La Salle Sunday morning. The 6-5 win came on a
Sammy Andersen sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Butler had a big day at the plate as the team as the team combined for a season-best 15 hits. Five of those hits came from
Lauren Fey, who tied the Butler single-game mark. Both
Jenna Foreman and
Elyse Babb added three hits.
With the game tied 5-5 after seven innings, the international tiebreaker was used in extra innings. With a runner placed on second to begin the top half of the inning,
Kaitlin Doud responded by striking out three consecutive La Salle batters to give Butler an opportunity to win in the bottom half.
Bri Avery was placed on second and was sacrificed to third by Foreman. Two batters later, Andersen flew out to center field to score the speedy Avery from third for the game-winner.
Butler and La Salle traded runs early with La Salle taking a 4-3 lead in the third inning. The Bulldogs' early runs came on an Andersen RBI double in the first inning and a two-run triple by Fey in the third.
With La Salle now leading 5-3 in the middle of the sixth, Butler manufactured a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the frame. Foreman and Fey led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A double steal put them at third and second, respectively, where they scored on consecutive sacrifice flies by Andersen and
Madi Christiansen.
Doud got the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. She allowed a single run in three innings of work.
Karli Ricketts (4.0) and
Alyssa Graves (1.0) handled the first five innings in the circle. The trio combined to allow La Salle only eight hits. Butler's staff had 11 strikeouts.
Cailey Joyce took the loss for the Explorers, going all 7.2 innings.
The Bulldogs (now 9-16 on the season) return to Indianapolis after being on the road since March 8 with the team's annual Spring Break trip.
Butler will travel to Miami (Ohio) Wednesday for a 5 p.m. first pitch. The Bulldogs' home opener is Saturday when a doubleheader with DePaul also opens the BIG EAST portion of the schedule.
