Butler saw its 10-match winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 at Valparaiso in a match played indoors in Griffith, Ind.
The Bulldogs started strong, taking the doubles point behind wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The teams of
Aviv Ben Shabat and
Adrian Mag, as well as
Thomas Brennan and
Spencer Lang each won their matches by a score of 6-4.
Mag gave Butler a 2-1 lead in the team standings with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Daniel Langston at the No. 5 singles position. Fellow senior Lang extended the Butler lead to 3-1 as he was the next match to finish, taking a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles over Brian Pecyna.
From that point, the host Crusaders would take the match with three straight singles results. Chad Kissell overcame a one-set deficit to defeat Butler's
Mason Dragos at No. 1 singles. After Valpo also picked up a win at No. 6 singles, the match came down to the No. 2 court. Brandon Ancona and Butler's freshman Brennan split their first two sets before Ancona took the court and the team result with a 6-4 decision in the third set.
The loss for the Bulldogs is the first since Feb. 8. Butler is now 14-5 on the season. Â
Valparaiso improves to 11-3.
The Bulldogs return to action next weekend, traveling to Villanova and St. John's for a pair of key BIG EAST matches to begin the closing stretch of the regular season where five of Butler's seven opponents will be conference foes.
