Fourteen Hits Help @ButlerSoftball Take Series Finale Over DePaul, 8-1

The Bulldogs took Sunday's getaway game against DePaul, wrapping up a three-game weekend series with an 8-1 win at the Butler Softball Field in Indianapolis, Ind.

After the win, Butler is now 10-19 overall, while DePaul falls to 21-9. DePaul took both games of Saturday's doubleheader in the first BIG EAST series for both teams.

Alyssa Graves, after an unsteady first few batters, responded by getting stronger as the game went on. The sophomore left-hander pitched a masterful complete game, scattering three hits and four walks to allow a single run. She struck out six Blue Demons. She improves to 4-7 on the season and gets revenged after DePaul tagged her with the loss in Saturday's first game.

Eight batters in Butler's starting line-up contributed to a 14-hit afternoon. Maddie Moore was a perfect 3-for-3, while Lauren Fey went 3-for-4. Kaitlin Doud and Karli Ricketts each added two hits.

For Fey, she now has 11 hits over her last 19 at-bats, which has raised her average from .241 to .329 over that five-game span.

Fey got the Bulldogs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, she dropped a hit over the third baseman's head into short left field to score two runs. Moore singled right after that, but DePaul ended the inning by throwing out a Butler runner at the plate. Butler had seven hits through the first two innings, but only a 2-0 lead to show for it.

Claire Gilliland opened up the game in the bottom of the third inning after DePaul had scored its lone run of the game in the top half of the frame. A DePaul error with two outs extended Butler's opportunity at the plate, which Gilliland capitalized on with a two-run double to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 advantage. That Gilliland double, along with a two-bagger by Doud were Butler's only extra-base hits of the contest.

Butler manufactured three runs in the bottom of the sixth on four hits and another DePaul error. The Bulldogs closed the scoring with a single run in the sixth.

Natalie Halvorson took the loss (12-5) for DePaul. She and Krista Dalgarn each pitched 3.0 innings.

The Bulldogs return to action with a pair of non-conference, midweek games. Butler travels to Evansville for a Tuesday contest before returning to Indianapolis to host UIC Wednesday. The Bulldogs host Villanova next weekend in a BIG EAST series.
