Senior
Paul Jorgensen added 19 points, including five three-pointers, for the Bulldogs, who snapped a three-game skid and are now 16-14 on the season.
Â
"There's a lot of emotion on this night for these two guys (Jorgensen and fellow senior
Nate Fowler)," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "Our fans created a great atmosphere tonight and we appreciate that. I thought our team played inspired for a full 40 minutes. It wasn't always perfect, but we played with great energy."
Â
Baldwin made 10 of his 17 attempts from the field and added a team-high six rebounds for Butler. Eight of his points came in the final 2:53 of the game to seal the win.
Â
Xavier took its final lead of the game (50-49) with 10:08 to play. A quick 6-0 response by Butler, keyed by back-to-back baskets by
Sean McDermott, gave Butler a 55-50 lead they would not relinquish.
Â
Jorgensen's 19 points Tuesday night were his high for a BIG EAST game this season. He added a career-high five steals. Fowler had seven points.
Â
Christian David tied a career-high with five rebounds, while adding career-bests with four assists and three blocks. He helped to hold Xavier's Naji Marshall to 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting.
Â
Paul Scruggs and Tyrique Jones led the visiting Musketeers with 13 points apiece. Xavier shot 44 percent for the game and held a slim 36-34 rebounding margin.
Â
Butler shot only 41 percent from the field, but committed only 10 turnovers.
Â
The Bulldogs are now 7-10 in BIG EAST play and head into the final regular season game Saturday at Providence among a crowded field in the middle of the BIG EAST standings as teams jockey for tournament seeding. Xavier, which had won five straight games, is now 8-9 in BIG EAST play (16-14 overall).
