Xavier pulled out a 13-8 win over visiting Butler Friday afternoon in a contest that featured a combined 14 extra-base hits.
Butler's
Harrison Freed provided a preview of what much of the afternoon would look like with a solo home run for the Bulldogs in the top of the first inning. It marked his 13
th blast of the season.
Xavier answered with six runs over the next two runs to take a 6-1 lead. Butler rallied with three runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take an 8-7 lead. The third inning was highlighted by a
Robbie McCargar two-run single, while
James Gargano's two-run home run was the key cog of the fourth.
That 8-7 lead was short-lived as Xavier put five runs on the board in the fifth. Both pitching staffs solidified at that point as the only remaining scoring was an eighth-inning run by Xavier. Â
Eight Butler batters shared the team's 10 total hits. Xavier's 14 hits included two home runs and eight doubles.
Sam Czabala picked up the win for Xavier, improving to 3-1 on the season. Czabala surrendered Xavier's early lead, but the Musketeers regained it while he was still on the mound.
With the win, Xavier improves to 7-1 in BIG EAST play (16-23 overall). Butler falls to 18-18 (2-6 BIG EAST).
After originally moving Saturday's scheduled game up to Friday as part of a doubleheader, rain has pushed that game back to Saturday and a first pitch time that is still to be determined.
