Freshman
Karli Ricketts starred as Butler picked up a 7-6 win in 10 innings Wednesday night at IUPUI. Ricketts belted two home runs and pitched six innings in the victory.
Ricketts' two solo home runs were the second and third of her Butler career. In the circle, she came in relief of starter
Alyssa Graves to allow only three hits and an unearned run in her six innings of work. Ricketts kept the Jaguars at bay for four innings beginning in the third frame and then re-entered as the pitcher in the ninth, ultimately picking up her fourth win of the season.
Butler is now 12-20 on the season; IUPUI falls to 9-25. This marked the second win of the season by Butler over IUPUI in non-conference play.
Butler got on the board first thanks to a three-run home run by
Sammy Andersen in the top of the second inning. It was the senior's third blast of the season.
IUPUI countered with three runs in the bottom of the third, which ultimately chased Graves and brought Ricketts into the circle.
The teams traded zeroes until the top of the sixth. Ricketts led off the inning with a home run down the left field line off IUPUI starter Lexi Lucas. After Dezirae Leonard took over for the Jaguars, senior
Kaitlin Doud greeted her with a solo home run to right field, giving Butler a 5-3 lead.
IUPUI extended the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Maddie Moore's sac fly scored pinch-runner
Bri Avery in the top of the ninth inning, but the host Jaguars countered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the stanza.
Ricketts led off the tenth inning with a home run to left center. The right-hander then made that run stand up by mowing down IUPUI in order in the bottom of the tenth for the 7-6 win.
Butler tied a season-high with 15 hits in the contest. Four of those belonged to Ricketts, which set a career-high for the first-year Bulldog. Doud had three hits, while Andersen,
Jenna Foreman and
Lauren Fey each had two. Foreman stole her BIG EAST-leading 24
th base of the season in the game.
IUPUI benefitted from three Butler errors, but left 14 runners of base in the contest.
Ricketts struck out five Jaguars in her 6.0 innings of work.
Wednesday's game was the first live action for Butler in a week due to unseasonable winter weather cancelling the most recent three-game set with Villanova. The Bulldogs are back in action this weekend, traveling to Seton Hall for a three-game, BIG EAST series that includes a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
