@ButlerAthletics' Barry Collier Appointed to NCAA Men's Basketball Oversight Committee

Butler Vice President/Director of Athletics Barry Collier has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee, the NCAA has announced. Collier will begin serving on the committee on July 1, 2019, and continue through June 30, 2023.

The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee ensures that appropriate oversight of men's basketball is maintained, will enhance the development and public perception of the sport and make recommendations related to regular-season and postseason men's basketball. The committee will prioritize enhancement of the student-athlete educational experience (academically and athletically), and in doing so, promote student-athletes' personal growth and leadership development.

"It is a tremendous honor to serve on the NCAA Men's Basketball Oversight Committee," said Collier. "College basketball provides amazing experiences for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans. I'm excited to work on their behalf."

The Men's Basketball Oversight Committee supervises qualifications and/or selection procedures for the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The committee will review recommendations from the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee and process other issues related to the administration of the championship. The committee will assume many of the duties of the former NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Issues Committee and will provide direction to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Rules Committee regarding playing rules. The committee is comprised of representatives from each divisional subgroup.

Collier, who led Butler's men's basketball team to prominence as head coach, has served at the helm of the Butler University athletic department since August of 2006. Collier has focused the department's efforts on the provision of exceptional student-athlete experiences, competitive excellence, serving as a source of pride and unity, and fiscal sustainability.

In recognition of his efforts, Collier was recognized with Under Armour AD of the Year honors in 2019, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Collier recently concluded a four-year term on the National Invitation Tournament Committee, serving as the committee chair for the 2018-19 season.

In July of 2013, Collier and Butler University President James Danko oversaw the school's move to the BIG EAST Conference. The move not only brought higher levels of athletic competition and exposure, the change aligned Butler University with some of the nation's premier private institutions.

Perhaps the most notable accomplishments by Butler athletics during Collier's tenure came during the men's basketball team's runs to the NCAA Final Four in 2010 and 2011. The school's NCAA Tournament success was transformative for Butler men's basketball, Butler athletics and Butler University. Elevating to a whole new level, the men's basketball team brought in more than $1.1 billion of media value to Butler, over the months surrounding the 2010 and 2011 Final Fours. During the 2010 Final Four in Indianapolis, one of the most rewarding media stories was the simple fact that Butler's men's basketball student-athletes attended classes on the day of the championship game. Butler wouldn't have it any other way.

Prior to his move to athletics administration in 2006, Collier was a college basketball coach at seven different institutions. Assistant coaching stints at Rose-Hulman, Seattle Central Community College, the University of Idaho, the University of Oregon, and Stanford University led to his first head coaching position at Butler in 1989. As Butler's coach, Collier led the Bulldogs for 11 years and to six postseason campaigns. In 2000, Collier was named the head men's basketball coach at the University of Nebraska, a position he held for six seasons before returning to Butler as director of athletics.
