@ButlerWSoccer Takes Down Local Rival IUPUI in 4-1 Decision

The Butler women's soccer team took down the IUPUI Jaguars by a 4-1 decision in Sunday evening's game at the Sellick Bowl.

The Bulldogs have scored a combined seven goals in just two games to start the 2019 season.

"The last two days in preparation for the game our ladies were fantastic in terms of grasping what we were going to do to break down (IUPUI's) system in order to score goals," said coach Rob Alman. "So to do that, create a ton of chances in that first half and take a couple of those, along with some really good set piece execution, as well."

How It Happened:
After controlling the ball for the first 20 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs finally got a break when Macy Miller beat her defender on the outside allowing a one-on-one situation with the Jaguars goalkeeper, Sophia Lipka.

Lipka blocked Miller's attempt on the goal, but in the scramble that followed, Miller was able to play the ball back in to Katie Soderstrom, who chipped in the goal from within the box, putting Butler up by one.

That score would only hold for another 40 seconds the Bulldogs press won the ball back in the middle of the field, allowing Anja Savich to dish a pass out to Soderstrom, giving her a one-on-one opportunity against Lipka.
Soderstrom finished the goal, netting herself four points in less than a minute of play, and putting the Bulldogs up 2-0.

However, Soderstrom was not done yet. Coming out of the half, in the 49th minute, Soderstrom lofted a corner kick that Celia Gaynor headed to Annika Schmidt, who was able to score off a header amidst the cluster in the goal box.

Later, Soderstrom notched her second assist of the night off another corner kick. She shot a near line-drive from the far corner into the goal box that never saw true possession. Following the kick in, Soderstrom was able to make a touch on the ball through the chaos out to freshman Becky Dean, who used a diving header maneuver to finish the goal.

In the last 15 minutes of play, the Jaguars caught a break in the Bulldogs defense as Valentine Pursey beat out the back line for a one-on-one with Butler goalkeeper, Stephanie Rodriguez. Rodriguez just missed the save as Pursey snuck in the Jaguars only goal of the night.

Stats So Far:
  • Soderstrom picked up six points in the match, posting as stat line of two goals and two assists.
  • This is the second consecutive game where a Bulldog has scored two goals in one match.
  • Dean scored her first goal as a Bulldog.
  • The Bulldogs took 20 shots, compared to the Jaguars five.
  • Butler has not dropped a contest in the Sellick Bowl since October of 2016.

Next Up:
The Bulldogs hit the road for the next two match-ups, taking on Northern Kentucky Thursday (August 29) and preseason No. 16 Wisconsin on Sunday (September 1).
