Butler's
Katie Soderstrom and
Annika Schmidt earned BIG EAST Player of the Week accolades in the first week of women's soccer conference honors, as announced by the BIG EAST office on Monday (August 26).
Soderstrom was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Schmidt claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors. Bulldogs goalkeeper
Stephanie Rodriguez was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as well.
Soderstrom tied for the BIG EAST high with eight points last week, totaling two goals and four assists in wins over Morehead State and IUPUI. The sophomore assisted on two first-half goals in Thursday's win at Morehead State, before going for two goals and two assists in Sunday's home win over IUPUI.
Soderstrom's strike at the 25-minute mark against the Jaguars proved to be the game-winning goal and came just 40 seconds after her first goal of the season. She added two more helpers to wrap up the six-point evening. Soderstrom tallied four shots in each game last week as well.
Schmidt led the defense in a 2-0 week as the Bulldogs scored a 3-0 win at Morehead State and 4-1 home victory over IUPUI. The Bulldogs outshot their opponents by a 38-9 margin, including 22-4 on goal, while holding both squads without a single corner kick. Schmidt added a flair of offense as well, scoring in Butler's win over IUPUI on Sunday.
Rodriguez posted the second-best goals against average in the BIG EAST last week, registering a 0.50 mark in a 2-0 weekend. The junior totaled three saves in wins over Morehead State and IUPUI, including a shutout of the Eagles.
The last time the Bulldogs swept Player of the Week honors was in August 2018, when
Paige Monaghan and Schmidt claimed the offensive and defensive titles, respectively.
