Third-ranked Georgetown used three second-half goals to pull away from Butler in taking a win Friday night at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis. The match served as the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
With the 3-0 result, the Hoyas improve to 6-0 on the season; Butler falls to 3-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Butler was able to get into the halftime locker room with the score still 0-0 thanks to three saves from keeper
Gabriel Gjergji in the opening 45 minutes. That included a save on Georgetown's Derek Dodson from point blank range in the sixth minute.
The momentum shifted to Georgetown 90 seconds into the second half as Jacob Montes took a feed from Dylan Nealis and wrapped a shot inside the right post for a 1-0 Hoyas lead.
That 1-0 advantage held until the 75
th minute when Zach Riviere fired a shot off a free kick from just outside the box. It found the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The final tally came in the 82
nd minute as Montes found the net once again off nifty passing from Dodson and Paul Rothrock. It was the second goal of the match for Montes and his fourth of the season.
