No. 6 Butler limited Providence to 32-percent shooting in taking a 70-58 road win over the Friars Friday night in Rhode Island. With the result, the Bulldogs run their record to 15-1 and stay unbeaten in BIG EAST play at 3-0.
It's the first conference loss for Providence, which falls to 3-1 in league play and 10-7 overall.
The Bulldogs set the tone early, forcing misses on Providence's first 13 shots of the night. Turnovers uncharacteristically committed by the Bulldogs kept the Friars in the contest early. Butler entered the night 17
th in the country at 11.1 turnovers per game, but turned the ball over 17 times Friday night.
Butler overcame the sloppy ball-handling by shooting 56 percent from the field and out-rebounding the home team, 44-26. Six different Bulldogs pulled down five or more rebounds.
Jordan Tucker and
Kamar Baldwin led the Bulldogs with 17 points apiece. It marks a season-high for Tucker, who made seven of his 11 attempts (including 3-of-5 from three-point range).
Bryce Golden had 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds, while
Bryce Nze scored 10 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Sean McDermott narrowly missed being the fifth Bulldog in double figures with nine points.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Tucker and Baldwin gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the night at 55-39 with 6:39 to play. An 8-0 run by Providence pulled the home team with 55-47 before a Tucker putback gave the Bulldogs some breathing room to utilize down the stretch.
Providence, which defeated the Bulldogs three times last season, was led by Alpha Diallo and his 21 points. The Friars shot 32 percent from the field and only 24 percent (6-25) from behind the arc. Butler entered the night eighth in the country in three-point percentage defense at .264, and improved upon that average.
Butler has held 12 of its 16 opponents this season under 60 points. Butler is fourth nationally in fewest points allowed per game.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday night, hosting BIG EAST preseason favorite Seton Hall at Hinkle Fieldhouse. A limited number of tickets remain for the 6:30 p.m. tip.
