INDIANAPOLIS – Head Coach
Jeff Voris handed out team awards at the annual Butler football postseason banquet over the weekend. All awards were voted on by the players, with the winner receiving a majority of the vote.
Top Dog Award – Offense
Stephen Dennis
Dennis led Butler with 41 catches for 593 yards and three touchdowns. A Second Team All-PFL selection, Dennis posted two 100-yard receiving games during his senior campaign. He caught 11 passes for 143 yards vs. Valpo, and gained 106 yards on five catches at Stetson. Dennis scored one touchdown in each of those contests, and added a game-winning rushing TD in Butler's victory vs. Indiana Wesleyan.
Top Dog Award – Defense
Dan DelGrosso
DelGrosso ranked third on the team and eighth in the PFL with 85 tackles. A starter in all 12 games, DelGrosso ranked fifth in the PFL with 9.5 tackles for loss and tied for first in the league with three fumble recoveries. His first fumble recovery may have been the most memorable as DelGrosso scooped and scored the first touchdown of the year for Butler vs. #1 North Dakota State in the season opener. The dynamic linebacker also recorded one sack and one interception in 2019.
Top Dog Award – Special Teams
Drew Bevelhimer
Bevelhimer ended his collegiate career on a high note. The senior from Indianapolis was tabbed First Team All-PFL, Academic First Team All-PFL and was a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award. Bevelhimer hit 10 of his 12 field goal attempts in 2019, including a career-long 52-yarder at Marist. He ranked third in the league in made field goals and fourth in field goal percentage. Bevelhimer didn't miss a kick inside 40 yards during the '19 campaign. He leaves Butler as the all-time leader in made field goals (46) and ranks second all-time in points (245).
Bulldog Pride Award
Brad Sznajder
The Bulldog Pride award is given to the player who is seen as the greatest representation of the program.
Brad Sznajder was the pick this year. Sznajder earned Second Team Academic All-America honors for the second-straight season. On top of that, he was a team captain, named honorable mention All-PFL and led the Butler rushing attack with 898 yards on 203 carries. Sznajder ranked seventh in the PFL in rushing yards per game (74.8) and eighth in all-purpose yards (97.2). His top individual performance included a 150-yard day vs. Jacksonville that included two touchdowns. In his final game at Butler, Sznajder rushed 22 times for 125 yards at Dayton.
Newcomer of the Year Award
Mike Manning
Manning played in 10 games for Butler as a true freshman and made 16 tackles. His best individual performance came at Marist when he recorded a season-high five tackles. He was also credited with four tackles in the PFL home opener vs. Drake.
Most Improved Player Award / Battle of the Trenches Award – Defense
Nick Mahalak
Mahalak started in 12 games for Butler in 2019. He ranked 14th in the PFL among all defensive linemen in total tackles with 33. As a redshirt-junior in 2018, Mahalak finished the season with just three tackles. The All-PFL honorable mention selection ranked 17th in the PFL in tackles for loss with seven. He recorded a sack at Morehead State and forced a fumble vs. #1 North Dakota State.
Battle of the Trenches Award – Offense
John McArthur
McArthur played as a team captain in 2019 as a redshirt-senior. The All-PFL honorable mention selection played in all 12 games, starting in 11. He helped BU rush for 1,842 yards on the ground and was excellent in pass protection allowing BU quarterbacks to throw for 1,868 yards.
Unsung Hero Awards
The Unsung Hero Awards recognize excellent play on scout teams. The offensive award was given to
Michael Benefield.
Carson Kimple earned the defensive honor and
Artie Dutmers was honored for his work on special teams.
One Play Warrior Award
AJ Deinhart
Deinhart received the One Play Warrior Award which is given to the player with the most special teams points. He played in all 12 games and returned 20 kick-offs for 380 yards. Deinhart also made three tackles as a special teamer. His longest kick return covered 35 yards at Morehead State. He saw the most action at Marist, bringing back six kick-offs for 90 yards.
