Indiana was able to overcome a halftime deficit and post a 68-60 win over Butler Saturday at the Crossroads Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.
Indiana, which is receiving votes in both national polls this week, is now 5-2. Butler falls to 1-2.
Butler cooled off from the field to begin the second half, which coincided with a 22-5 run that gave Indiana a 56-45 lead with 7:01 remaining in the game. At that point, Butler was 3-of-21 from the field in the second half after shooting 54 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
A 13-3 run by Butler gave the Bulldogs their largest lead at 37-28 with 1:02 remaining in the first half. Butler led 37-32 at halftime despite missing starting point guard
Aaron Thompson, who missed the contest with a knee sprain suffered at Villanova Wednesday night.
"I thought we got the ball where we wanted it," said Butler coach LaVall Jordan. "Obviously some shots that we feel confident in and believe in our guys,
Bryce Golden,
Bryce Nze going at the rim. Had some wide open shots for some of our guys that can make those. And then I think it affected us when we didn't, and that's where we have to be tougher. We had a stretch where we got good looks, had the ball at the rim, didn't finish or they blocked it, and we didn't respond well in that moment."
Jair Bolden led the Bulldogs with 20 points on a career-high six three-pointers (on nine attempts). He was one of four players in double figures for Butler. Golden returned to the line-up after missing the Villanova game Wednesday night and had 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshmen
Myles Tate and
JaKobe Coles each posted a career-best 10 points. Nze had 10 rebounds.
Indiana shot 61 percent from the field in the second half, finishing at 53 percent for the game. The Hoosiers had 34 points in the paint as Trayce Jackson-Davis led them with 21 points and five blocks. Armaan Franklin added 20 points, hitting five three-pointers.
Butler shot 39 percent for the game, including 9-of-19 from three-point range. The Bulldogs had a slight 35-30 rebounding advantage.
The Bulldogs return to action Monday night, hosting Southern Illinois at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will tip at 7:30 p.m. on FS1. Tickets (featuring a reduced capacity and a number of health and safety protocols) are available through the Butler Ticket Office.
