Payton Longest - 2018

Softball John Dedman

@ButlerSoftball 2020 Preview Series: Outfield

Butler's outfield will be anchored by a pair of seniors, who will be joined by the team's youngest group of talent in 2020.

Seniors Alyssa Garcia and Payton Longest will begin the season in center and left, respectively. Garcia started 26 games a season ago, while Longest started 15.

"Alyssa and Payton have shown really good consistency for us during the fall and into the spring," said Hall. "Alyssa is our best defensive outfielder and she keeps us steady out there. They've earned their spot in the line-up as we start the season."

Sophomore Bri Avery tied for second on the team with seven stolen bases a season ago. Her .259 batting average was third on the team. She'll play a significant role in left field. Hall says her speed is one of the biggest advantages the Bulldogs will have on opponents this season.

Avery is among a group of five sophomores and freshmen who will complement the experience of Garcia and Longest.

Hall will look for ways to get freshman Mackenzie Griman's bat into the line-up. Griman will do some pitching in 2020, but will also be an option in corner outfield positions, as a designated player, and as a pinch-hitter. At a senior at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind., she batted .436. She had nine home runs and 62 RBI as a sophomore when she was named to the Max Preps All-American Team.

Sydney Kempf will look to play a larger role in 2020 after injuries limited her to only five at-bats as a freshman.

"Mackenzie might have the strongest arm on the team and she has good pop in her bat" said Hall. "Sydney has been putting in a lot of work on her swing, and you can see her improvement."

Freshmen Abby Taylor and Mallory McMahon will also factor into the outfield equation.

Taylor, from nearby Fishers, Ind., earned second-team all-state selection as both a junior and senior, hitting .524 as a senior with 22 stolen bases. McMahon arrives at Butler from Crown Point, Ind. hit .421 as a senior with three home runs and 24 RBI. In her three seasons, Crown Point posted a record of 84-13.

This group will look to make up for the loss of production that came with Jenna Foreman's graduation. Foreman left Butler as the program's all-time stolen bases leader with 107 career swipes. She set single-season records with 63 hits and 35 stolen bases in 2018.

Compared to Butler's pitching staff and infield positions, the Bulldogs' outfield has the most playing time up for grabs in 2020. However, the outfield includes a pair of experienced seniors and a young crop of talent who can certainly be steady in the field and ignite a Butler offense that will need their production throughout the line-up.
